Two purpose-built homes based in Nutley, East Sussex, catering for 20 young people with physical disabilities and learning difficulties. Person-centred planning is at the forefront of our philosophy with the individual’s needs and wishes at the centre of our service. This care home provides specialist nursing care and is equipped with technology to aid care and support in a safe, comfortable and homely environment.
Our aim is to provide a care home with nursing that offers support and stimulation to help individuals maximise their potential physical, intellectual, emotional and social capacity within an individual person-centred plan. The people we support have the right to live as normal a life as possible and to have the respect of those who support them.
Care and Support
Specialist nursing care is available throughout the home 24 hours a day. The focus of care and support is based on our person-centred philosophy.
SHC has access to a range of trusted external therapists including physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and expert advice is available on any aspect of an individual’s care, recreational pursuits or environment. Wisteria Lodge also has access to a variety of complementary therapies including aromatherapy, reflexology, music and entertainment.
Wisteria Lodge has the benefit of an Activities Co-ordinator, who devises and carries out personalised activity plans, alongside the individual’s key worker.
The many activities include alternative complementary therapies, music, arts and crafts, cooking, hydrotherapy, swimming and horse and carriage riding for the disabled.
The people we support benefit from the use of their own specially adapted vehicles for outings and sporting activities.
The homes are close to the town of Uckfield in East Sussex, with Eastbourne and Ashdown Forest a short distance away for activity days, which are always popular destinations.
Participation in further education and leisure activities at local colleges and outreach facilities are available to all. Every effort is made to enable people to keep in touch with relatives and friends. Advocacy and volunteer befriending schemes are encouraged.
All staff undertake an induction programme when joining SHC. In addition, a system of supervision and support for care staff enables them to gain experience and increase their skills.
Extensive in-house training is provided by the SHC Training Academy and QCF courses are undertaken in conjunction with the local colleges.

Other homes offering care for Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD)
Since moving to Wisteria Lodge, every time we have visited, my brother has seemed relaxed and communicative, a sign that he is at ease with his environment and with the staff. This has been very reassuring for the family. The home is light and spacious and the staff friendly and caring, some are especially dedicated. Efforts are made to involve the residents in activities, which means they have variety and stimulation in their daily lives as well as good care.Sister of resident at Wisteria Lodge, October 2019
