Forest Lodge is a large Edwardian country house near Uckfield, East Sussex. The house, which has been tastefully extended, is set in eight acres of safe gardens. Forest Lodge specialises in the care of older people who are mentally frail with confusion, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, and the staff team is skilled in this specialist care.
Our aim is to provide a home that offers a safe, comfortable environment with support and stimulation to help individuals maximise their potential physical, intellectual, emotional and social capacity. The people we support have the right to live as normal a life as possible and to have the respect of those who support them.
The friendly and homely atmosphere we have created at Forest Lodge ensures that people are able to continue their lifestyle with personal privacy and dignity. In the peace and tranquillity of our lovely home and gardens, individuals are supported by a high standard of care provision.
Care and Support
Nursing care is of prime importance and is provided 24 hours a day by qualified staff under the personal supervision of the Registered Manager. Local GPs visit the home regularly and are on call at all times. The home liaises with outside professionals in the community, such as dieticians, the Community Mental Health Team, speech and language therapists and podiatrists. The people we support are also taken for outside appointments at the dentist, medical centre and hospital.
SHC has access to a range of trusted external therapists – physiotherapy, occupational therapy and reflexology are available on request. Experts are available to advise on any aspect of an individual’s care, recreational pursuits or environment.
The activities programme is one of the most important aspects of life at Forest Lodge. A huge range of activities are undertaken by the people we support including handicrafts, quizzes, reminiscence sessions, music and movement, cookery and art therapy. The key aim of the programme is to provide mental stimulation, engage attention and interest, and to prolong mobility.
A mini-bus is available to take the people we support out for trips, such as having lunch in a pub, shopping, visiting places of interest (e.g. the Cats Protection Centre in Chelwood Gate and the Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare near Ringmer), local community college productions and a summer trip to Seaford.
Traditional events are celebrated throughout the year, such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Christmas and New Year. During the summer months, the people we support and their families enjoy having tea and spending time in the garden, especially during Forest Lodge’s annual Barbecue Garden Party. Most importantly, each person’s birthday is celebrated, inclusive of a birthday cake with candles to blow out for the occasion.
A quarterly newsletter is sent out to families to provide further information about activities and trips that the people we support have taken part in.
Our experienced chef prepares interesting and homely meals, with attention to individual requirements and special diets. Meals are offered to families in special circumstances who are visiting, in order for them to be able to spend mealtimes with the people we support.
Food is prepared by our chef for special events, such as Halloween and Christmas.
All staff undertake an induction programme when they join SHC. Thereafter, a system of supervision and support enables them to gain experience and increase their skills. Extensive in-house training is provided by the SHC Training Academy to develop skills in dementia care, and QCF courses are undertaken in conjunction with local colleges. Outside courses are also attended.

Other homes offering care for Older People
Two visits post lockdown in the garden. Well organised, staff attentive, Mum even had her sunglasses on. Being her birthday, staff came out to celebrate with cake and candles and took photos which I received. Very caring towards Mum who responded positively to all the attention. Thank you for makingDaughter of resident at Forest Lodge, August 2020
it a special occasion for her.
